Young people are increasingly experiencing mental health challenges and isolation, and spending more time in digital or online environments. Florida, like many other states, has begun filing lawsuits against social media and gaming platforms for alleged harms and lack of guardrails to protect children.

If these cases result in financial settlements, those funds could represent a significant opportunity to invest in what young people need most: programs, services, and “in real life” opportunities that promote youth well-being and healthy development by creating connection, belonging, support, and engaging experiences that help young people grow and prepare for what comes next.

Why Planning Matters Now

But history shows settlement funds do not automatically reach youth-serving programs without intentional planning. The national Fund IRL coalition is working to ensure these resources are directed with clear intent, transparency, and accountability so that they reach those most impacted by the harms of social media – young people – and are prioritized to support their well-being.

About the Coalition

Fund IRL is a national coalition convened by the Children’s Funding Project, bringing together youth development, mental health, education, service and advocacy organizations to ensure that potential settlement funds are invested in programs and services that promote youth well-being and healthy development.

A National Movement

Convened by the Children’s Funding Project, Fund IRL unites youth development, mental health, education, service, and advocacy organizations around a shared goal: investing settlement funds in young people’s well-being.

Florida’s Statewide Coordinator

Florida After School has been selected as the statewide coordinator for the Florida Fund IRL coalition, bringing partners together across the state to speak with one voice.

Organizing Now

The coalition is organizing now to help shape how potential settlement funds are used. This includes bringing partners together and engaging with decision-makers at the state and local level.

By building coordination early, the coalition aims to ensure communities are ready to act and that funding decisions expand access to experiences that keep young people engaged, help them build skills, and prepare for what comes next.
